Professional Dog Training near Richardson, TX

Richardson's Trusted Source for Dog Training

A dog that's actually trained — not just tired out — takes structure, repetition, and a trainer who understands canine behavior at a deeper level than "sit" and "stay." That's been K-9 University's approach since Chuck Bratt, a Certified Master Trainer, founded the school in 1993. Richardson pet parents who want results that hold up outside the training room choose our Plano or Garland location for exactly that reason.

Obedience Training in Richardson, TX

Spend an evening at Breckinridge Park or along the trails at Prairie Creek Park, and it's easy to spot which dogs have been through real training — they hold a sit while a jogger passes, they check in with their owner instead of bolting toward the nearest squirrel. The dogs still lunging at the end of the leash haven't had the benefit of structured obedience work yet.

Obedience training is the foundation underneath that kind of calm, reliable behavior, and it doesn't happen by accident. Our trainers build each program around your dog's individual temperament so the results actually stick, rather than fading once class ends. That's the standard K-9 University brings to Richardson dog owners — training built to strengthen the relationship between you and your dog, not just check a box.

K-9 University's Effective Dog Training Programs

What Changes When Your Dog Trains With Us

Our method addresses a dog's behavior on every level — physical, mental, and emotional — not just obedience commands in isolation. Richardson clients typically report:
    • Calmer, less hyperactive behavior at home
    • Fewer chewed shoes and dug-up flower beds
    • A dog that listens the first time, not the fifth
    • More mental engagement, less boredom-driven mischief
    • Improved manners around other dogs and new people
    • A visibly closer bond between dog and owner
    • Less pacing, whining, and restlessness
    • Reduced aggressive behavior
    • Lower stress levels — for the dog and for you

Board-and-Train — Our Most Thorough Program

A once-a-week lesson has its place, but it asks a dog to hold onto new behavior across six days of no reinforcement. Our board-and-train program closes that gap for Richardson families by giving your dog a distraction-free, fully immersive stay at our Plano or Garland, TX facility.

The stay typically runs 14 days, during which your dog works through the most intensive version of our curriculum. After pickup, we schedule a one-hour orientation and then move into weekly 30-minute private follow-ups, followed by group classes with you and your dog together. Most Richardson families complete the whole arc — board-and-train plus follow-up — in roughly two to two-and-a-half months. The approach works equally well for a puppy starting from zero and an older dog with behaviors to unlearn.

Why Richardson Pet Owners Choose K-9 University

Richardson has built a genuinely dog-friendly identity inside the Dallas metro — you can see it at Bush Central Barkway right off N. Central Expressway, where the fenced play yards for large and small dogs stay busy most evenings, and along the trails at Breckinridge Park and Cottonwood Park, where leashed walkers are a constant. Neighborhoods near UT Dallas and Prairie Creek see a steady stream of dog owners heading to Prairie Creek Park for an after-work walk.

That's the kind of community K-9 University trains for. Richardson pet parents choosing our Plano or Garland location aren't settling for "close enough" — they're choosing a program built for the dog that's actually calm at Bush Central Barkway, not just tired out for an afternoon.
